Finding Faith in Fortune Cookies

So, I've been looking for and applying to jobs for a few months, and about two weeks ago I got my first spark of hope - an interview! It was for a communications and marketing position at the hospital where Nathan has worked for more than six years. I actually ended up having two interviews and I felt optimistic about my chances, thinking that I had gotten good interview experience even if the job didn't work out.

A few days ago, I got the phone call that they selected another applicant. I was completely, utterly disappointed. I was so much more affected by it than I had thought I would be. I had given so much thought to how different things could have been with this job and I really got my heart set on it. Finding out that they picked someone else felt more like losing the job than not getting it.

I think the challenge I'm facing can be summed up by one of my most recent fortunes that I got after eating Chinese one night last week:

I know that finding a job/career is difficult for everyone, especially after just graduating from college. Right now is a particularly challenging time with thousands of people with more experience and better qualifications out of work and looking for jobs. In college, I didn't want a degree that pointed to a specific career because I wanted the flexibility to make my own career, but that also makes it more difficult because I'm struggling to find any direction that I can go. And I expect a lot from myself. I want to have a successful job and be able to support myself and I just feel like I'm letting myself, and other people, down.

I must have a friend at the fortune cookie factory, though, because this is another fortune cookie I recently got and was exactly what I needed after such a big disappointment:

It made me realize that it really is not my character to give up. And so, after a little moping, I'm back to looking for more jobs and putting together applications. I'm keeping my head up. I truly, truly believe that everything happens for a reason, and that there is a bigger plan and another job out there that is meant to be mine. And I know that I won't give up until I find it.

You never know what could happen! The place I work at now initially offered the job to someone else but couldn't let me go so they added a position! So maybe this will lead to something good/better (I totally love my job.)

Aww, the fortunes were soo cute and great!! I've been there as well. My degree is in elementary education and after moving to Minnesota I subsitute taught for 2 years and had countless interviews. I would get my hopes up and then get let down when they chose another applicant :-( It was hard, but you will find your place-- keep positive!
